Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political accountability in local government is critical to ensuring transparency, good governance, and responsiveness to citizens' needs. In Keffi North Local Government Area (LGA), Nasarawa State, political accountability is essential for fostering public trust, improving service delivery, and ensuring that local government leaders fulfill their duties to the community. Effective political accountability involves mechanisms that hold leaders responsible for their actions and decisions, including regular reporting, public participation, and oversight by citizens and relevant authorities (Tijani & Danladi, 2023). However, despite the legal and institutional frameworks designed to promote political accountability in Nigeria, there are concerns regarding the implementation of these mechanisms at the local government level. This study examines the extent to which political accountability mechanisms are operational in Keffi North LGA and evaluates their effectiveness in promoting good governance (Usman & Bala, 2024). By assessing the roles of local government officials, citizens, and oversight institutions in ensuring political accountability, the study aims to contribute to the discourse on improving governance at the local level (Bello & Zubair, 2025).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of various frameworks for promoting political accountability, local government administrations in Keffi North LGA have faced challenges in implementing these mechanisms effectively. Allegations of corruption, lack of transparency, and failure to engage citizens in governance processes are prevalent. This has led to a gap between citizens' expectations and actual government performance, eroding public trust and participation in the local political process. The effectiveness of accountability mechanisms such as citizen participation, budget transparency, and monitoring by civil society organizations remains uncertain in Keffi North LGA. This study seeks to assess the level of political accountability in Keffi North LGA and identify the factors that contribute to the challenges of ensuring accountability at the local government level.
